Libertarian Party Affiliates Take Matters into Their Own Hands Following Failed National Resolution on International Entanglements

Scott Horton speaks at the 2026 Libertarian National Convention

There is a growing distaste within the Libertarian Party over foreign policy and international alignments. Sparking grassroots actions across state affiliates, the movement follows a controversial debate at the Libertarian National Convention. Scott Horton used his guest speaker time at the National Convention to deliver a sharp critique of the party's current international relationships from a historical perspective. He centered his focus squarely on the International Alliance of Libertarian Parties (IALP).

In what convention attendees described as one of the weekend's most impactful speeches, Horton warned delegates that continued ties to the IALP risk compromising the Libertarian Party's core non-interventionist principles. He detailed how various international networks, often operating under the guise of promoting "liberty," are actively intertwined with State Department priorities, USAID workshops, and Western-funded NGOs. Key personnel overlaps exist between some of the worst of these and the IALP infrastructure.

"Check out Scott Horton's keynote speech to the 2026 Libertarian Party National Convention in Grand Rapids, Michigan this afternoon, absolutely BLISTERING the International Association of Libertarian Parties."

Horton referenced specific historical color revolutions and contemporary political disputes such as the recent foreign funding transparency debates in Georgia. The US Libertarian Party is providing domestic cover for foreign intelligence and interventionist agendas.

According to Horton, these groups "would have us serve as pressure from below to justify their interventions from above." Backed by the IALP's original founder, who has reportedly expressed alignment with Horton's concerns regarding the direction of the organization, Horton introduced a formal resolution on the convention floor demanding that the national party completely disassociate from the alliance.

Despite the passionate defense from Horton and members of the anti-interventionist wing of the party, the national resolution ultimately failed to pass the convention floor.

However, in true Libertarian fashion, this has only decentralized the debate. Grassroots party members and state leadership groups are now bypassing the national apparatus to advance the anti-entanglement framework on their own terms. The Libertarian Party of Hawaii is leading the charge.

On May 27, Hawaii's Executive Committee unanimously passed its own "Resolution Against International Entanglements." The state affiliate's resolution echoes Horton's core argument that international alliances have strayed from their foundational visions and expose the party to foreign influence pipelines. Hawaii's proactive measure is designed to serve as a blueprint for the rest of the country.

Rather than waiting for a shift in leadership at the national committee level, the Hawaiian affiliate has formally severed its own state-level associations with the IALP. Their resolution explicitly calls on other state affiliates to bypass national hesitation, safeguard the domestic party from foreign government-linked operations, and publicly demand that all Libertarian position holders resign from all compromising international bodies.

Party insiders suggest that Hawaii's unanimous vote is likely the first domino to fall. Activists across several states are already mobilizing to introduce similar state-level resolutions, signaling a growing determination among the party's rank-and-file to enforce strict non-interventionism from the bottom up, regardless of national sentiments.

Resolution Against International Entanglements

WHEREAS, the International Alliance of Libertarian Parties (IALP) no longer represents the original goals and vision of its founder and has been co-opted by foreign influence operations that are incompatible with the non-interventionist, peaceful foreign policy clearly articulated in the Libertarian Party platform; and

WHEREAS, continued association with the IALP exposes the Libertarian Party to potential conflicting foreign influence and undermines the Party's commitment to independence from government agencies such as the State Department, USAID, and other entities that may advance agendas contrary to libertarian principles;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that we, the undersigned Libertarian Party state affiliates:

  • Call upon the Libertarian National Committee (LNC) to immediately disassociate the national Party from the IALP; and
  • Urge all LNC and Libertarian position holders to publicly resign any affiliation with the IALP and commit to protecting the Party from foreign influence and government-linked operations; and
  • Affirm its own disassociation from the IALP at the state level and encourages other state affiliates to do the same.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be transmitted to the LNC, all other state Libertarian Party affiliates, and published publicly as a clear signal of our commitment to the Libertarian Party's principles of peace, non-intervention, and resistance to foreign and governmental influence.

(This Resolution Against International Entanglements was unanimously passed in the Libertarian Party of Hawaii Executive Committee on May 27, 2026)
